Studying in Freiburg

Founded in 1457, the University of Freiburg is one of the oldest German universities and is today one of the nation’s leading research and teaching institutions. For more information about the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg, please follow this link.

Freiburg is attractive not only with its geographical location close to France and Switzerland (and thus to the major international organizations in Geneva) but also has interesting examples of how to tackle urban health problems (public transport, cycling, energy-passive houses, public information on air pollution and others).

The Student Portal is here to help yout find your way around!

Within the scope of a "Studium generale" you can take part in a lot of different courses, for example different sports or courses in art and culture. You can improve your competences in foreign languages or computing skills, too.

Apart from that it is possible to look for accommodation in the private sector. Accommodation can be found through the students’ accommodation office (Homepage des Studierendenwerks Freiburg-Schwarzwald), the local classifieds (, search for "Zimmer in WG").

It is best to already start looking for accommodation as early as August or September. In October it is very difficult to find accommodation.

While you are searching for your own accommodation you could stay at the Freiburg youth hostel ( or the ‘Backpacker Hotel’ (
