Short Courses - Certificates of Advanced Studies

General Administrative Information

The short courses or “Certificates of Advanced Studies” offered by the Centre for Medicine and Society (ZMG) at University of Freiburg give participants the opportunity to update knowledge, deepen specific fields of interest or gain and amplify specific research or intervention skills on their area of profession. They are usually 5 week courses of fulltime attendance from Monday to Friday at the University of Freiburg.

The Short Courses (Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS)) are components of the Master of Science in Global Urban Health at University of Freiburg. After participation in one Short Course participants can extend their studies to obtain a Master of Science in Global Urban Health if they take part in the full program.

In case of entering the full Masters Program, one advanced module /CAS can be completed before participating in the core module.

  

Credits

The full 5 week short course comprises in total 7 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and accumulation System credits), representing approximately 175 hours of total student investment time, including contact time with lecturers, self-directed study and assessments. 1 ECTS represents 25 hours of work load.

Admission requirements and application process

The course is limited to 25 participants. Applications complying with the admission criteria will be accepted without a deadline. Hence the admission process follows a “first come first serve” process. Applicants will be notified of the decision of the Selection Committee as soon as possible. Accepted candidates will receive a Notice of Admission.

The short course is open to professionals in health, social sciences including economics, urban planning and others holding a higher academic degree or trained professionals with one or more years of working experience.

The medium of instruction is English. English skills fluent in written and spoken are required.

Candidates can apply by sending the completed “application form for short courses” as well as a curriculum vitae and a short motivation letter (half a page) to the course administration per mail.

Tuition fee and scholarships

The total fee of the 5 week course is 2500 €. The tuition fee covers coursework, printed materials etc. but does not include accommodation, insurance or other personal living costs during the stay. If the participant withdraws from a course on a short notice, parts of up to the whole course fee will be charged. The arrangement of financial support to cover all study costs is the responsibility of the applicant. Please note that we cannot offer financial support or scholarships.
